Winsome Condra, CICA
Although I have leadership experience from my previous roles as Senior Risk Manager, Director of Marketing and PR, and Director of Operations (in training), I am relatively new to procurement. I have taken some webinars online, but attending Impact at the NIGP Leadership Summit was my first in-person NIGP event. And it was awesome.
I met a lot of cool people from my cohort and even walked away with three potential partnerships that could help us optimize our ERP system and secure better discounts. Talk about a win-win!
If I had to sum up my Impact experience in a word, it would be “phenomenal.” I mean, everything from the people to the trainers, the venue to the activities. Every single minute I spent at Impact was incredible and valuable.
I am fortunate to have a boss who believes in the power of professional development. In fact, a big reason I ended up in Impact in the first place was that my boss encouraged me to find ways to get more involved with NIGP.
I went into Summit with a plan. I knew I wanted to network with other procurement professionals. Once I saw the vendor list, I picked out who I wanted to talk to and scheduled meetings ahead of time.
I also wanted to learn more about what other departments are doing. I am in charge of a lot of process improvements, including reorganizing the procurement department. I was really excited to hear from other people in procurement to learn what they are doing and get confirmation that I am moving in the right direction with the reorganization.
From my previous leadership roles, I had opportunities to attend other leadership meetings that were more generalized, which meant they were more of a production. While they have their own place in my professional development, I found Impact to be much more intimate and focused on leading as a procurement professional. I liked how it was broken down in terms of the different classes we took in person. I also enjoyed meeting with my cohorts virtually before the in-person event so we could get to know each other personally and professionally.
The NIGP Leadership Summit is a great opportunity to develop yourself as a leader so you can be more effective in your procurement role. Having gone through it, I have some advice for anyone who is considering attending in the future.
It’s worthwhile
I know that stepping away from work and life can feel daunting, but this event is worthwhile. It’s energizing! You’ll leave feeling like you can conquer the procurement world. Hopefully, your job will pay for it. If not, show them the added value of stepping away from your day-to-day and focusing on becoming a more effective leader. Share testimonials from my story and others here on the NIGP blog. We’re real people who have gotten real value from the Leadership Summit.
Be mindful of your time
The pre- and post-event webinars are a great idea, but I recommend finding just one of each that really speaks to your needs and interests. It’s tempting to sign up for everything, but I found that I couldn’t fit in more than that because of scheduling conflicts. Signing up for one can help you set aside that time and focus on whatever topic is most important or interesting.
Be open
Make a point to meet as many people as you can. Bring your business cards and hand them out to everyone to make it easy for them to keep in touch with you. Be vocal and participate in the classes. These classes are so engaging, and you’ll get more out of them the more you participate.
This was my first in-person NIGP event, but it won’t be my last. I’m excited to continue growing in my procurement role and networking with other NIGP members. I am working on getting my team more involved with NIGP at the local and national levels, and I can’t wait for them to experience the incredible opportunities NIGP has to offer.
