Brief Description and History
For more than 75 years, Colonial Life has helped America’s workers protect the valuable assets they’ve worked so hard to build. We specialize in payroll-marketed, voluntary employee benefits. With more than 3 million policies in force and a customer base of 80,000 businesses and organizations, we are a national leader in voluntary benefits. We have more than 8,000 sales representatives in the field dedicated to serving our customers and policyholders. Colonial Life is a stand-alone subsidiary of Unum Group, a Fortune 500 company. In New York, similar products, if approved, are underwritten by a Colonial Life affiliate, The Paul Revere Insurance Company.
Products/solutions unique to the government
Colonial Life has a dedicated public sector division focused solely on helping governmental entities provide benefits and services to their employees while reducing their expenses. We offer our full range of services to public sector employers at no direct cost to them. Examples of these services include: funded flexible spending administration, complimentary AD&D, core product enrollment and communication, dependent verification services, a variety of wellness screening benefits, 1-to-1 employee benefits counseling, and others.
An example of a government-related project that was innovative - something that helped solve a problem or contributed a solution
We helped a city in Florida achieve a 30% reduction in required HR staff-time during open enrollment by taking on electronic core enrollment responsibility and delivering electronic data return feeds. (Case study, “Cost Savings Through Automation” Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company, May 2013, NS-12466.) This is one of many such examples.
New technologies being developed or adopted that will have an impact on the way products and/or services are delivered
We are constantly working to develop new technologies to meet the evolving needs of our Public Sector clients.
For example, our easy-to-use enrollment system works online or offline and guides employees through the enrollment process, including showing them the payroll deductions they can expect.
If your enrollment system needs are more robust, we can supplement our enrollment capabilities to work with a growing, wide range of benefits administration and human resource systems, for fully seamless enrollment and administration services.
By working together, we can provide you complete benefit services, such as life event change documentation, perpetual enrollment, 24/7 access, broader enrollment support, carrier feeds and more.

A more focused, market specific RFP would greatly benefit the issuer and increase their chances of getting the products and services they are actually seeking.
