(Continuing Education Units)

On July 27, 2004, NIGP adopted the International Association for Continuing Education and Training’s (IACET) Criteria and Guidelines for Quality Continuing Education and Training Programs: The CEU and Other Measurement Units as the standard for all education and training programs. The NIGP Education Department is responsible for reviewing and approving all NIGP education and training programs for adherence to IACET’s Standard.

NIGP has been accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). In obtaining this accreditation, NIGP has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standard which is recognized internationally as a standard of good practice. As a result of our Authorized Provider status, NIGP is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for our programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard.

IACET CEU awards are held to the strict, research-based Standard for Continuing Education and Training. Only IACET Authorized Providers, who undergo a strict evaluation by continuing education peers, can award the IACET CEU. IACET Authorized Providers are required to reaccredit every five (5) years.

The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) was created by IACET as a unit of measurement for continuing education. One (1) IACET CEU is equal to ten (10) contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience, delivered under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. Under IACET's care, the IACET CEU has evolved from a quantitative measure to a hallmark of quality training and instruction.

Participants in an NIGP course may earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs). NIGP educational programs will state the number of CEUs available for each offering.

NIGP will follow the IACET standard of ten (10) hours equaling one (1) CEU. The NIGP CEU administrators will determine CEU allotments in advance of the class and publish the anticipated award. The minimum award will be for 0.1 CEU or one (1) contact hour.
