Sample Purchasing Month Proclamation

Start with a phone call to the governor or mayor’s aid, inquiring about the correct procedure for proclaiming March as Purchasing Month. Most often they will tell you who to address your letter to, and what it should contain.

Write the letter to the governor/mayor on behalf of your chapter. Provide information about your chapter, its activities and how they impact the state, province or region. Utilize any statistics you may have regarding savings as a direct result of purchasers doing their job. Include sample wording for the proclamation (see sample proclamation at this site).

Request a photo opportunity with the government official issuing the proclamation. Take advantage of this opportunity to include other activities that will bring recognition to the profession (see activities list at this site for suggestions). Invite key leaders and officials to attend your event.

Be sure to send copies of your press release and subsequent media coverage to NIGP at PurchasingMonth@nigp.org for inclusion in the next issue of the Buy Weekly.
