SUGGESTED Ideas For Activities During Purchasing Month

Try and hold your main event in mid-March.
 
Planning ahead is key to having a low-stress, fun time while promoting your profession:
  a. Make sure your activities are realistic to achieve within your timeframe and budget.
  b. Don’t do it alone! Delegate and get everyone involved.
  c. Look to sponsors to support your activities.
 
Hold a public or vendor seminar. Sample topics:
  a. “Alternatives to Traditional Purchasing Practices: Performance Contracts"
  b. “How to do Business in Your Jurisdiction”
  c. Green products; minority businesses; diversity issues
 
Invite the legislator of your state’s procurement code to speak.
 
Hold a Purchasing Swap Meet, bringing agencies together.
 
Hold an Open House in your department to allow agency employees to learn what “purchasing is all about”:
  a. Include a fact sheet that covers all your responsibilities and areas of achievements
 
Hold Department Activities:
  a. Hold an educational seminar for purchasing personnel
  b. Have a “buyer of the year” recognition within your agency
  c. Volunteer at an area charity – Habitat for Humanity; Children’s Hospital
  d. Scavenger Hunt
 
  e. Pass out info on Purchasing related topics in preparation for a Purchasing Jeopardy game.
 
  f. Visit other departments throughout the month and talk with them about Purchasing and any issues or suggestion they have for improved understanding, and communication.
 
  g. Have a contest to see who can come up with the most words made up of letters in "Procurement and Supply Management.
 
Give a presentation at your Chamber of Commerce.
 
Check your local library or community center on what activities you can hold there.
 
Encourage your county, township, city, etc. to proclaim March as Purchasing Month. (sample proclamation available at this site) If you already have obtained the proclamation, try and see if it can be renewed or announced again to the media.
 
Invite a prominent purchasing colleague as a guest speaker.
 
Coordinate a Purchasing Fair or presentation at your local university, college or high school to inform students about the industry and professional opportunities.
 
Make sure your agency knows that March is Purchasing Month by:
  a. Announcing it at your staff meetings
  b. Promoting in internal newsletter
  c. Notifying HR of any events you are holding
  d. Add an announcement with the purchasing month logo at your agency’s website.
 
Send a press release to your local press (paper; TV news channel, and radio station) on all activities happening in your area, regardless of how small.
  a. Make sure you have all your information together and are ready to answer any questions they may have.
 
Ensure all events have literature available, including a fact sheet or FAQ (frequently asked questions).
 
Don’t forget to take photos documenting your activities. Send them to NIGP for inclusion in the next newsletter.
 
Write an article to be included in the next issue of the Buy Weekly, informing everyone of all you did to support your profession
