As of July 27, 2004, NIGP has adopted the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) as the standard for all education and training programs. The NIGP Education Department is responsible for reviewing and approving all education and training programs for adherence to the CEU criteria. Only those activities that have been approved by the Education Department will be awarded CEU units.

NIGP is an Authorized Provider of CEU units through The International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET)(Provider# TBD). IACET CEU awards are held to the strict, research-based IACET Criteria and Guidelines for Continuing Education and Training. Only IACET Authorized Providers, who undergo a strict evaluation by continuing education peers, can award the IACET CEU. IACET Authorized Providers are required to re-apply and be reauthorized every five (5) years.

The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) was created by IACET as a measurement of continuing education. One (1) IACET CEU is equal to ten (10) contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. Under IACET's care, the IACET CEU has evolved from a quantitative measure to a hallmark of quality training and instruction.

Participants of an NIGP course may earn Continuing Education Units (CEU). NIGP educational programs will state the number of CEU units available for each offering. CEU units award totals are based on the number of hours spent in the program. As a result, the exact number of units one may earn may vary from published amounts if slight alterations in the program agenda are made.

The NIGP will follow the IACET guidelines of ten (10) hours equaling one (1) CEU. The NIGP CEU administrators will determine CEU allotments in advance of the class and publish the anticipated award. The minimum award will be for .1 CEU unit or one (1) hour. General rules for determination include:

60 minutes equal one hour
50 to 59 minutes will be rounded up to one hour or .1 CEU
30 to 49 minutes will be rounded down to half an hour or .05 CEU
Anything less then 30 minutes will not be counted

Administrative matters and time spent at lunch or class breaks are not applicable towards the cumulative CEU count.
